Between Earth and Sky

Contemporary Maya Paintings from Guatemala

Contemporary Maya Paintings from Guatemala

Between Earth and Sky: Contemporary Maya Paintings from Guatemala highlights the vitality of Indigenous Maya artists working in the 1990s through the 2010s. In the decades following the Guatemalan Civil War, many Maya communities—Central America’s largest Indigenous population and the target of a prolonged genocide—turned to art as a source of healing and resilience. Artists created vibrant narrative paintings that celebrated agricultural cycles, community festivals, and spiritual traditions, while also confronting urgent realities such as migration, climate change, and the lasting effects of violence and displacement. Featuring 21 paintings by 14 Maya artists from the Crocker Art Museum’s permanent collection, Between Earth and Sky underscores the deep connections between the land, its peoples, and their spiritual beliefs.
