Small-group discussions and hands-on activities with docents


Using a central theme and select works of art throughout the Museum, trained docents facilitate small-group discussions and hands-on activities.

  • Homeschool Days and Tour + Performances are appropriate for children, ages four and older.

Homeschool Day: Wearable Art
Tuesday, October 9, 12 – 2 PM (drop in) $3 per person in advance, $5 per person at the door; free admission for adults chaperoning a homeschool family or group
After exploring fashion in artwork at the Crocker, join us in the studio to make your own wearable art!

Homeschool Day: Still Life
Tuesday, November 13, 12 – 2 PM (drop in)• $3 per person in advance, $5 per person at the door• Free admission for adults chaperoning a homeschool family or group

Inspired by still life paintings, students will make their own compositions using wet and dry media while learning the core elements of art and principles of design.

Tour + Performance: Mathematical Madness with B Street Theatre
Tuesday, December 11; 11 AM & 12 PM• $12 per person, chaperones are not free
From Eratosthenes’s work with prime numbers, to Aryabhata's calculations of pi, and Albert Einstein's figuring of E=MC2, the history of math is revealed in B Street School Tour’s zany and hysterical collection of short plays. The performance is complemented by a special tour of select work from the Crocker’s permanent collection.

Homeschool Day: Animal Sculptures
Tuesday, January 8, 2019, 12 PM – 2 PM (drop in)• $3 per person in advance, $5 per person at the door• Free admission for adults chaperoning a homeschool family or group

We invite you to explore animal sculptures around the Museum, including in the special exhibition Modern Menagerie: Sculpture by Loet Vanderveen, then try your hand at making your own fierce creation.

Homeschool Day: The Prints of Jacob Lawrence
Tuesday, February 12, 2019, 12 – 2 PM (drop in) $3 per person in advance, $5 per person at the door Free admission for adults chaperoning a homeschool family or group

Discover the art of Jacob Lawrence along with a visit to our studio, which will be transformed into a print lab where students can create their own art to take home.

After exploring figurative work in the collection, students work together to draw silhouettes of the human form. A decorative background puts the finishing touch on this creative exploration.

This two-for-one program includes a professional performance paired with a docent-led tour of select artwork, including the exhibition History, Labor, Life: The Prints of Jacob Lawrence.

Noon Year's Eve: A Free Family Festival

This year, we’re kicking the Noon Year Festival up a notch. The Crocker Art Museum will be decked-out in purple, and we encourage all of our young visitors (and their grownups) to do the same!
