This program is no longer available.

We’re kicking off our new, globally-focused studio series with Pantea Karimi, an Iranian-American artist whose work explores the intersection of art, history, and science. Journey into Karimi’s studios and discover new art-making techniques while learning about her artistic process. Participants will draw from her rich study of medicinal botanical illustrations and illuminated manuscripts to create their own drawings.

About the Artist

Pantea Karimi has lived, studied, and worked in Iran, the United Kingdom, and the United States. She started her training in painting at age 14, which led her to pursue art professionally. Her works explore the intersection of art, history, and science. Much of her inspiration comes from the illustrations and texts of medieval Persian, Arab, and early modern European scientific manuscripts. Using conceptual and visual interpretations from her research, she creates individual bodies of artwork using interactive installations, silkscreen, digital illustrations, and prints.

Karimi's prints and digital works have been exhibited in solo, group, and traveling exhibitions in Iran, Algeria, Germany, Croatia, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and the United States — including the de Young Museum, Google, and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2019 City of San Jose Arts and Cultural Exchange Grant, the 2019 Silicon Valley Artist Laureates Award, and the 2017 Kala Fellowship-Residency Award. She is currently an Adjunct Faculty in the Digital Media and Studio Art Departments at the College of San Mateo and Cabrillo College.

Catch Karimi's solo exhibition, The Unbearable Lightness of Mathematics in Oakland, now through October 17. Visit the artist's website to learn more.
