Japanese Film Festival Presents "Mary and the Witch’s Flower"
Sunday, May 20, 2018
(2017, 103 minutes, PG)
Director Hiromasa Yonebayashi created and directed many famed anime films for the seminal Studio Ghibli, including "The Secret World of Arrietty" (2010). Yonebayashi has since founded his own anime studio, Studio Ponoc, and the result is "Mary and the Witch’s Flower," which brings the art of anime film to a new level of realism and mastery. The film centers around Mary, a school girl who finds a magical flower takes her on an extraordinary adventure. With animation that makes this film a work of art unto itself, Yonebayashi depicts the lush English countryside in a photo-realistic style that departs from contemporary anime. "Mary and the Witch's Flower" is based upon Mary Stewart's 1971 children's novel, "The Little Broomstick." Presented by the Sacramento Japanese Film Festival, this will be an exclusive Sacramento screening of this groundbreaking film.
