For Ages 18+

Begin your exploration of the self-portrait by touring the exhibition Testament of the Spirit: Paintings by Eduardo Carrillo to see how the artist's style evolved through the years, then practice gestural drawings of your own face from observation. Students will learn the traditional chiaroscuro technique and how to use a variety of drawing tools.

About the Instructor:

Emilio Soltero, Ph.D., is an art history and art studio professor at various colleges and universities. He has lectured internationally and is the founder of the Chilam Balam international art journal published by University of California, Davis. He is a muralist, with works on view at the University of California, Davis and California State University, Sacramento campuses. Soltero has authored books on drawing and sequential art.

No experience is required unless noted. The Museum provides student-quality supplies included in the fee unless indicated otherwise. Students are welcome to bring their personal supplies; however there is no discount for doing so. Oil paints are not allowed in studio classrooms.
