By giving up my pursuit for realism, I allowed the chaos of my mind and the brightness of my thoughts expression and created something with far more resemblance to who I am.

This piece evolved without consideration for my original plan. Trying to create a self-portrait is for me the equivalent of trying to strain out the chaos of who I am into neat, flat brushstrokes. It’s confining and frustrating. In planning this piece, I was trying to narrow myself down into a single aspect of who I am, which was a journey destined for failure. In the process of attempting to do so my work deteriorated into something that looked like me but lacked any sign of spirit or personality. By giving up my pursuit for realism, I allowed the chaos of my mind and the brightness of my thoughts expression and created something with far more resemblance to who I am.
