Activism Through the Arts

About the Sacramento General Congress of Women (SGCW):

Following Julia Ward Howe’s post-civil war call for women of all nationalities to unite as a General Congress of Women, 13 women leaders have convened the first General Congress of Women in the United States under the leadership of Joan Marie, a leader in the compassionate peace movement. 150 years ago, after the American Civil War, Suffragette Julia Ward Howe wrote the Mother’s Day Proclamation asking for a General Congress of Women to heal racism and the carnage of war. About Compassionate Sacramento:

On July 25, 2017 the Sacramento City Council passed a resolution drafted and presented by Compassionate Capital Region for Sacramento to be recognized internationally as Compassionate Sacramento — an aspirational title to help align policy with community needs. Through this resolution, Sacramento joined the Charter for Compassion as a participant in the International Compassionate Cities Initiative which supports governments and citizens in planning and realizing initiatives that foster compassionate action in areas such as community building, city-wide innovation, social entrepreneurship, sustainability, community & civic engagement and governance.
