About the Sacramento General Congress of Women (SGCW):
Following Julia Ward Howe’s post-civil war call for women of all nationalities to unite as a General Congress of Women, 13 women leaders have convened the first General Congress of Women in the United States under the leadership of Joan Marie, a leader in the compassionate peace movement. 150 years ago, after the American Civil War, Suffragette Julia Ward Howe wrote the Mother’s Day Proclamation asking for a General Congress of Women to heal racism and the carnage of war.
